Conduct Free Background Checks Using Iowa Courts Online Web Site
You can conduct a free background check of prospective employees by accessing the Iowa Courts Online Web Site. You should still have all prospective employees sign a release and authorization allowing you to conduct a background search. If you are conducting background searches of your employees you should also make sure to conduct the search before offering employment or make the offer conditioned upon the successful background check.
Please be sure to consult your employment lawyer before conducting background checks using online resources.

YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT USE IOWA COURTS ONLINE!!! THIS INFORMATION ALSO INCLUDES DISMISSED AND DROPPED CHARGES!!! UNLESS YOU OPEN EVERY ENTRY AND ARE FAMILAIR WITH LEGAL SPEAK IT APPEARS AS THOUGH A PERSON HAS BEEN CONVICTED OF ALL THE SHOWN CHARGES!! I MYSELF HAVE ABOUT 60 ENTRIES AND ALL BUT 8..THATS RIGHT 8.....WERE DISMISSED!!IT APPEARS AS THOUGH I HAVE 7 FELONIES WHEN IN FACT I HAVE ONLY ONE FOR A BAD CHECK!!!! SO FOR ANY EMPLOYER READING THIS,.DON'T BE CHEAP WHEN YOU HAVE A PERSON'S FUTURE IN YOUR HANDS!! GET A LEGITIMATE INVESTIGATION CO. TO DO YOUR CHECKS!!! IOWA COURTS IS MEANT FOR JUDGES AND LAWYERS AND NOT TO DO BACKGROUND CHECKS!!!
Russell,
Thanks for the comment. Any employer should be careful when conducting any type of background check to verify the accuracy of the information obtained. I also recommend that employers should also contact their employment lawyer when using online resources such as Iowa Courts Online. Further, as I said in my post, the employer should also have prospective employees sign a release and authorization to obtain the information. However,it's not difficult to determine the disposition of a case on Iowa Courts Online. Just click the disposition button to determine the result of the case. And I disagree that Iowa Courts Online is meant for just lawyers and judges (which is why it is free and open to the public).
Russell,
You should have thought about these concerns regarding future employers (even if it doesn't affect you personally) before committing felonies! I don't feel sorry for anyone who doesn't get a job based upon their record. I use it as one tool before we hire someone. I also thoroughly go through each filing and see what the courts have decided. Just because it was dismissed does NOT mean you weren't guilty of committing that crime!
